Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is being developed for the PlayStation Portable, but that doesn’t mean director Hideo Kojima and company are taking it easy. In an open letter to the fans (via Kotaku), Kojima promised that the new title would not only be full-featured, but “require hundreds of hours to complete.”

“The main team from MGS4 is participating in the development of this title and I am involved in all aspects of the game, ranging from design, direction and scenario writing,” Kojima wrote in Konami’s internal magazine On Screen.

“Despite being on the PSP, we don’t plan on making any compromises with the graphics. The art team is used to producing PS3-level quality and the results will make you wonder if this is really a PSP game.”

Peace Walker will be set in 1970s Costa Rica, some ten years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3. The story will revolve around Big Boss’s battle to defend the nation from foreign invasion without a military.

Kojima has repeatedly promised that Peace Walker will be a “Metal Gear Solid 5-class game,” but that it will contain a number of features unique to the PSP. One of those features is multiplayer, which will feature multiple Snakes working together to complete various missions.

No word on when it will be released, but it’s currently slated for 2010. Knowing Kojima’s penchant for delays though, that date is hardly set in stone.
