Vancouver-native, Brian Wong recently received investment for his side project that bridges the world of mobile phones and games. It has been rumoured that Sony Ericsson is about to take it up a notch by making a PlayStation-branded gaming phone.

Sony Ericsson is developing a phone that fuses Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go, reports Engadget. It may have a 3.7’’ -4.1’’ screen, with a landscape slider and PSP-like controls, a touchpad as the joystick, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The PlayStation phone may be announced later this year.

The gaming phone may also run on Google’s Android 3.0 OS, a code-name for Gingerbread OS. It will include a marketplace for Android-based games including standard Android apps. There is also a chance that PSP and PSX games will be ported to the phone through Android apps, just like Square-Enix for iPhone.

If the PlayStation phone really is true, will handheld game consoles be a thing of the past?

I love LittleBigPlanet PSP. The platforming’s fun, the create tools are solid, and online’s undoubtedly impressive – especially considering that these upload/download features are on the PSP. I’d like it to run a bit smoother at times, have the create tools be a bit more intuitive, and so on, but none of that should put a damper on this game for fans of the franchise or people looking to get their first taste of Sackboy’s exploits.
Make no doubt about it: LittleBigPlanet PSP is an outstanding game.

This is an exclusive PSP entry in the popular Assassin’s Creed franchise, which follows covert assassins at crucial junctions in history. This game bridges the story gaps between Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2, focusing again on Altair in a storyline set shortly after the events of the first game. Here, the bloodlines that tie these characters are drawn as Altair tracks the remaining Templars to the island of Cyprus.

The PSPGen team sure tries hard to make good on their promises. After pushing back the launch of CFW 5.03 GEN-B for HEN due to some last minute bugs last night, now we are off to have a merrier Halloween, thanks to the finally and fully launched product.
The PSPGen team sure tries hard to make good on their promises. After pushing back the launch of CFW 5.03 GEN-B for HEN due to some last minute bugs last night, now we are off to have a merrier Halloween, thanks to the finally and fully launched product. Although they were not able to overcome the bug that presented itself at the last minute, we still very much appreciate their efforts for the homebrew scene.

Says Magixien’s note on their website:

We failed to achieve our initial goals but the main thing is unless it happens and can play games with 5.55 and protected.

Here are the features of this release:

compatible with the PSP-3000 and PSP-2000 v3 official firmware 5.03

play backups of games REQUIRE PSP firmware above 5.03, including 6.xx

playing UMD require firmware above 5.03, including 6.xx

playing UMD / ISO games protected against the CFW

play PS1 games

GEN available VSH MENU (SELECT)

recovery in VSH available

reading homebrews

etc

Here it is in action:

On the other hand, here are the things that they weren’t able to work out, unfortunately:

MGS demo refuses to run

We’ve tried everything and what works in 5.550GEN-D2 has not worke in the 5.03GEN-B. Pity…

The Recovery mode menu is “mixed”

The RECOVERY MODE 5.02GEN-A has been patched to run on the PSP-3000. It can change the most usual options but we encounter some problems with this VSH Recovery in and we have not managed to fix it. In fact, the menu sees some of his lines not properly allocated and others who do not work. Note that on a PSP-3000, the recovery is useless, or nearly so, since all the useful features found in the VSH menu or in Ultimate VSH menu Total_Noob of Total Noob we strongly recommend that you install.

Here are the options of Recovery and their equivalents:

USB toggle = OK

Configuration = ok

Skip Sony: not work (need not severe)

Hide corrupt icons = not work and labor Skip sony logo

Game folder HB ok

Autorun EBOOT ok

Fake region ok

Use vsh menu ok

Screw the naysayers.

Today, we’re putting that rumor to rest and compiling our list of the best games the PSP has to offer you at this very moment. These are the games we think are the most fun to play. These are the ones we find our handhelds getting drawn toward. These are the ones that make train rides to work and the horrible TV shows our significant others watch tolerable.

These are the Top 25 PSP Games of All Time.

Synopsis: If Final Fantasy Tactics represents a classic strategy role-playing game and Jeanne d’Arc is something new, then Disgaea happily sits somewhere in the middle; a grind-happy, over-the-top take on the purest elements of SRPGs done with its own particular flair. It also runs beautifully on the PSP, bolstered by a proper 16:9 view and multiplayer modes that make it far more than just a simple port of the PS2 original, Hour of Darkness. In addition to offering Ad Hoc throwdowns, a complete, hours-long side quest featuring Etna was added, giving the game single- and multiplayer bonuses — bonuses that some could argue actually make this a better game than the original PS2 release. It might sound like blasphemy to those that played through the series’ debut on their lovable black brick, but NIS loaded the PSP port with so much goodness that it’s almost impossible to deny so why try? Go getcher SRPG fix sated with one of the best games the genre’s ever seen, now with more goodies!

Synopsis: It’s easy to look at the PSP hardware and imagine console-level games running in the palm of your hand and crave a epic RPG or a massive action experience, and while both are served quite well with games on our list, we were keen to spotlight something that’s undeniably old-school. Hammerin’ Hero, a spiritual successor to the 8-bit Hammerin’ Harry outings of yore, is a perfect example of how a timeless gameplay mechanic — in this case bashing stuff while running from left to right — can be made fresh again. Innovative boss battles, a playful approach to side scrolling and deceptively simple graphics all add up to an experience that’s oh so much more than the sum of its parts. There’s so much simple, effective goodness packed into Hammerin’ Hero’s presentation that it almost makes us wish more companies would attempt an update like this. Almost.

Synopsis: Level-5 and Sony have enjoyed a rather fruitful partnership over the years. The Dark Cloud games are some of the most lengthy, densely packed action RPGs on the PS2, ditto for Rogue Galaxy, and we’re not even going to touch what a gold mine Dragon Quest VIII was for Square Enix. When Level-5 decided it wanted to go the strategy RPG route, though, we were ill prepared for just how successfully they would pull it all off. Adhering to the standard formula just enough to be familiar but introducing new elements like a dynamic weak point for enemies and the ability to transform main characters into floor-wiping hurt-dealers, Jeanne d’Arc turned the tropes of the genre on their head to amazing effect. It’s easily one of the most promising franchise debuts on the PSP, and one we can only hope continues in the future.

Synopsis: Remakes and updates of arcade classics are nothing new; developers and publishers have been dipping back into their earlier libraries to revive decades-old hits for years — particularly in recent ones. Few, if any of them have done it with the same kind of impact as Space Invaders Extreme, which never really loses the magic of the original ever-marching armies slowly moving toward the bottom of the screen. Instead, it bolsters that classic gameplay with a set of all new, ultra-powerful, mega-flashy weapons that are insanely fun to use. Throw in tons of bonus levels, boss battles and pick-ups that are thrown out rapid-fire and you have a game that can entertain even the most ADD-addled youngster and classic gaming fogey alike, no small feat any way you present it. Even with a seizure-inducing light show and bleepy bloopy electronic thumping away in the background.

Synopsis: Explaining the appeal of the Pursuit Force series is like trying to quantify the magic inherent in an ’80s action movie. The good guys were badasses, the bad guys were two-dimensional, cackling ubervillains and everything just kind of exploded for no reason other than the fact that explosions make everything better. In Extreme Justice, you race around streets, across water, and in helicopters with limitless ammo, leaping from car to car and commandeering vehicles by shooting the drivers in the face at point-blank range. It’s like BigBig Studios distilled the very essence of Michael Bay’s imagination into a bunch of ones and zeroes and burned ‘em onto a UMD. The result is one of the most balls-out awesome action games on the PSP, packed with high-speed chases, ridiculous stunts and fighting crime the American way: with lots and lots of bullets.

Synopsis: The original release of Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSone is a damn near perfect example of classic turn-based strategy role playing games at their most pure. The music is incredible, the blending of Tactics Ogre-style grid-based movement and attacks and familiar final fantasy critters like imps and chocobos is wonderful. There’s just one problem: the localization is… well, let’s just call it “muddled” and stay nice. War of the Lions remedies this, turning a convoluted, head-scratching plot and cast of characters into something that’s much easier to follow, drips with flair and even sports a handful of sexy new cutscenes to make it that much more engaging. Sure, the framerate’s a little wonky, but the gameplay is every bit as incredible as it was during the 32-bit era, and marks one of the easiest recommendations we’ve got on our list here. If you like SRPGs, you need this game; it’s as simple as that.

Year Released: 2007

Synopsis: That exclamation point in the title of Sid Meier’s Pirates! isn’t just there for show, it’s a condensed demonstration of the inherent awesomeness in this swashbuckling strategy adventure. Ask anyone who has played the game in its various forms over the years and you’ll actually be able to hear the exclamation point in the voice when they say the title. It’s that awesome. Intricate management of trade, crew, ships and, yes, plenty of combat (in ship-to-ship and sword fighting flavors) means a staggering amount of detail for a portable game — one that’s actually a little closer to the original PC release than even the console remake a few years back. No, it’s not an absolutely perfect port, but so much of the original (and now-classic) game has been carefully preserved that the positives absolutely outweigh the negatives. Get it? Weigh? Like an ancho-aww, forget it.

Watch the Video
Synopsis: Doing an origins story is always a balancing act,. You want to create something new without ruining the original game’s more sensitive plot points. Silent Hill has the advantage of being different for every person that gets trapped in its foggy streets and abandoned buildings, so the move to make the game significantly more physical than cerebral worked — especially with a trucker as the main character. Granted, Travis’ exploration of the birth of everyone’s favorite twisted town wasn’t quite as engrossing as the first two games, but it nevertheless provided a unique, PSP-focused romp through the early days of the town and helped expose just how the burg ended up so dark in the first place. Less creepy than confrontational, Origins nevertheless managed to add to the Silent Hill lore rather nicely and deserves a spot on our list for doing so.

Synopsis: Okay, so enough time has passed that we’re all willing to admit the original Killzone wasn’t quite as amazing as the hype had made it out to be, right? That’s okay, because Guerrilla’s follow-up efforts were platform-defining examples of their technical prowess and were actually good games to boot. In fact, Liberation, an isometric shooter that takes place between the original and PS3 sequel, is a great game, perfectly capturing the feel of the universe but painting it in a decidedly more PSP-friendly way. The graphics were great, the sound was fantastic and you got to see Jan Templar being all badass again. This is him doing plenty of wet work, and it’s as satisfying as it is packed with explosions — and there are a lot of explosions. There’s also online play, thanks to a patch that arrived quite a bit later, so if you and some buddies held off on picking up the game, you can shoot each other in the face, Infrastructure-style.

Synopsis: Nobody knew what to expect from start-up Ready at Dawn when it was announced that the studio would be picking up where Naughty Dog left off, filling the gap between the first and second Jak games with a solo adventure for our favorite ottsel. As it turns out, the pairing of an ex-Naughty Dog and a few Blizzard vets was a match made in heaven, and Ready at Dawn quickly established themselves as purveyors of not only some of the most impressive tech on the PSP, but of fine game makers in their own right. The RAD team made a fantastic platformer, rife with gadgets and varied gameplay that felt at once familiar and altogether new and, perhaps for the first time since the system’s launch, demonstrated just how much power was under the hood of Sony’s little portable. Plus, it gave Max Casella some checks to cash other than those Doogie and Sopranos residuals, and in that, we’re very pleased indeed.

Synopsis: Downstream Panic! arrived with so little fanfare, such an absence of hype or buzz that it actually ended up being one of the most pleasant surprises of early 2008. Possessing a cute, bright color palette and chipper music, the game looked a bit like a distant cousin to LocoRoco, but the gameplay was decidedly more Lemmings-like, forcing you to use multiple tools to guide a small school of fish from the top of the screen to a safe spot at the bottom. As the game went on, the raft of tools you could use would grow, and going back to earlier levels with these new tools was encouraged, giving the game an amazing amount of replay value. Even now, the game stands out as one of the most unique and pleasantly challenging games on the PSP. Just because you’ve probably never heard of it doesn’t mean it’s worthy of being skipped over. If you can find a copy on the cheap, snap it up before they all disappear.

Synopsis: We’ve said it many times when referencing Sony Japan’s quirky, impossibly adorable little action puzzler, but anyone who has played the game likely has “Bu-bu borecha acheku” looping through his or her head as he or she reads this. If you’re one of those people, we’re sorry (not really, the song is adorable). The original game’s music was widened in style and amount for the sequel, and the LocoRocos themselves picked up the ability to swim, smash into stuff and squeeze into smaller spaces (not to mention attach themselves to all manner of new interactive objects either as individual singing blobs or one massive congealed one), giving the follow-up quite a bit more longevity than the original. Longevity means more LocoRoco, more LocoRoco means more singing, and more singing means more fun, right? No, no, don’t try to argue, we’ve got it all figured out. Synopsis: WipEout is synonymous with PlayStation. The two are so intrinsically intertwined that when we watch that scene from Hackers with the hilariously obvious not-video-game sequence, we still imagine it’s running on some kind of mega-PSX, a machine so stupidly powerful that running it on a huge screen with CG graphics is totally possible even a decade ago. Studio Liverpool reminded us exactly why WipEout = PlayStation when they kicked off the launch of the PSP with WipEout Pure, but it wasn’t until Pulse that we felt it’d really become something truly new to the franchise. Pulse is packed with races. It offers new modes. It looks stupid awesome. It has online play. In short, it’s everything that was great about the first PSP game, but updated to be deeper, more involved and with little goodies like online play, custom music and a screenshot function. Synopsis: Addiction comes in many forms: a stiff drink, a stout meal, hoarding tchotchkies, biting nails… and then there’s Puzzle Quest, quite possibly more arrestingly powerful than any of the above — at least for most. You wouldn’t think combining the already intoxicating gameplay of the three-or-more matching gameplay of Bejeweled would be so heady when mixed with RPG elements like quests, experience and a storyline, but good lord is it. For some of us in the office, Puzzle Quest still lays claim to the most hours anyone has put into one game on the PSP, and for good reason: the game is pure, unadulterated digital crack. The mechanics are simple, and though the game is a dirty, cheating, cheap little bastard, you’ll swear up a storm and then jump right back in. It’s accessible, rewarding, offers progression like few other games and offers more bang for the buck than almost anything else on the system. Yes, seriously.

Synopsis: It might not have elicited the same “Holy crap, the PSP can do this?” reaction that Liberty City Stories had when it landed on the PSP, condensing the granddaddy of sandbox games into something that felt no less epic nor fun into something you could carry in your pocket, but Vice City Stories is a better game. It’s more than tangentially linked to the game on which it’s based, taking place two years before the events of the original Vice City, but pouring even more content and options into an area that’s near-identical to that seen in the PS2 game. Synopsis: As anyone (okay, most) will tell you, Square’s first return to the world of Final Fantasy VII in video game form wasn’t as amazing as some would have hoped with the whole 10th anniversary redux. Dirge of Cerberus was too much of a departure, straying too far from Square’s bread and butter known as the almighty RPG, and left some wondering if remembering Midgar fondly would only happen by playing through FFVII again. Crisis Core destroyed those fears, turning the world pre-FFVII into an action experience that paid loving tribute to one of the most beloved JRPG universes ever made and giving gravity and emotion to a storyline that was… well, let’s just call it “uniquely” translated the first time around. With a heavier exposition on Aeris and Zack’s relationship and damned fine action RPG bits, this is truly the tribute that Final Fantasy VII fans were hoping for, and it’s an awesome game too. Win-win!

Synopsis: It’s actually rather impressive: Clap Hanz took over for Camelot after the first Hot Shots Golf and never looked back, cranking out almost a half dozen full-blown sequels. Despite living and breathing all things Hot Shots (it’s all the developer has done to date), the golf series has managed to stay interesting and engaging with each iteration. The move to the PSP suffered little — if any — in the transition and brought with it a ridiculous amount of customization and all the seemingly innocuous charm of the console versions just… well, portable. The formula — cutesy characters teeing off and plunking shots along a course — seems so simple that the game’s now-trademark blend of easy to understand controls and increasingly deep layers of play end up being deceptively addictive. The second PSP outing added online Infrastructure play and a bunch of hidden items on the courses themselves, resulting in yet another improved sequel.

Synopsis: Not even Guitar Hero attempted to replicate the experience on a portable platform without bringing along the custom peripherals that made it so unique in the first place, but when Backbone Entertainment gave it a go, they looked to the roots of the modern genre: Harmonix Music Systems’ Amplitude and FreQuency. So no, Rock Band Unplugged isn’t really a replication of the original game minus the instruments, it’s more of a spiritual successor to the games that formed the building blocks. If you’re still reading this, you probably never played the digital crack that was Harmonix’s first two PS2 games, so we’ll try to help you onto the same path as those that did and likely bolted out the door to pick up Unplugged. You hit a series of patterns, swapping between paths (instruments) in an effort to chain together bits of a song. Doesn’t sound all that amazing? Wait until you play it. Synopsis: Some might scoff at our decision to pick the second Lumines game over the first. After all, Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s blend of Tetris-like block matching/clearing and music was perhaps at its strongest with the debut’s soundtrack, one that eschewed the familiar for something that was decidedly more in line with Q Entertainment’s home turf. The sequel, while injected with the likes of Black Eyed Peas and Gwen Stefani, offered more of the gameplay that made the original so addictive in the first place. What’s more, the quirky charm of the original wasn’t lost in the sequel, and the addition of a ton of new modes, particularly the option to create your own custom mix of songs (sorry, “skins”) and the new Mission Mode that assigned progressively more challenging goals that had a direct influence on your skills when playing the main mode. Yep, it’s puzzle fusion bliss alright.

Synopsis: The Syphon Filter franchise was all but dead and buried before Sony Bend decided to give it one last go. In a single game, they revitalized the series and moved it further into the upper echelon of third-person shooters than any of the previous games did — even the ones in the series’ heyday back on the PS one. The follow-up, however, took everything the PSP debut did to make Syphon Filter relevant and made it better; deeper multiplayer, bigger levels, better gameplay, better controls and a better story. By doing so, they managed to turn an already great PSP shooter into a must-have. The cover-based shooting played just as well as before, the multiplayer offered more modes and better balance and the almost James Bondian set of gadgets was more fun to use. In short, the game rocks and deserves a spot in every PSP owner’s library.

Synopsis: It’s not exactly the first thing one thinks of when confronted with the name Final Fantasy, but Square Enix reached back into the Ehrgeiz back o’ tricks and produced this, easily the company’s most accomplished fighter to date. Merging cast members from every Final Fantasy game from the original all the way up to FFXII and pitting them against each other in arenas rife with interactive, gravity-defying segments, Dissidia plays at once like an arena-based fighter and… well, yes, a Final Fantasy game, complete with HP bars, special attacks, items and summons. The RPG influence isn’t just window dressing, though, it’s a core part of the entire experience, and there’s so much content packed onto one UMD that it’s hard to see this as anything but a huge thank-you from Square Enix to Final Fantasy fans.

Synopsis: There aren’t a whole lot of PS3 games that have gotten the PSP treatment, and for good reason: it’s not just a massive technological difference, the innate controller disparity means a lot of the experiences just wouldn’t come across with the same kind of impact. Leave it to Sony Bend, the studio responsible for the fantastic reboot of the Syphon Filter franchise, to do Insomniac’s new Resistance series proud. Retribution manages to combine an innovative approach to targeting — auto-locking onto enemies in a central square — with a storyline that actually furthers the Resistance over-arching plot. It’s an impressive feat to say the least, but even without the Resistance mythos to stand on, Retribution ends up being a damn fine shooter in its own right. If you were convinced by early efforts that a first-/third-person shooter wasn’t possible on the PSP, this will help reverse that belief with aplomb.

Synopsis: Every time he says it, we all laugh, roll our eyes and nod knowingly. Sure, Hideo Kojima, this is really your last MGS game. With Portable Ops, though, he took the series in a decidedly unique, clearly PSP-focused direction. It was still about stealth, sure, but broken down into smaller areas and with the dynamic of trying to build a private army through capture. A multiplayer component made the almost Pokemon-esque way of collecting, capturing and trading valuable members of other players’ armies seem somehow fresh — even the act of finding Wi-Fi access points that would reveal unique additions to your personal army was turned into a button-mashing mini-game as only Kojima can do it. Oh, and it probably doesn’t help that even now, almost three years later, the game still looks damned good on the PSP.

Synopsis: Nobody thought it was possible: a PS2-level God of War experience on a handheld? Not only were both of SCE Santa Monica Studios’ Greek action epics huge in scale, they were some of the most hardware-stressing games on the PlayStation 2. Amazingly, though, Ready at Dawn Studios did it; they made a game that was every bit as visually amazing, offered a lengthy prequel story and did so with no compromises. This was God of War, running in your hands, without any cut corners or a sense that it was “just” a portable game. Any self-respecting God of War would do well to pick this up — you should have just enough time to play through it before continuing the adventure with the God of War Collection on your PS3, which will tide you over until God of War III hits.

Synopsis: Few games were as uniting for the IGN PlayStation Team as Patapon 2’s infectious brand of rhythm-based strategic action. We all played the game even though only one of us actually reviewed it — an exceedingly rare occurrence. We’d bust the game out during events and while on planes together all in the hopes of strengthening our army of one-eyed critters and gaining new, more powerful equipment and special attacks. Sony couldn’t have asked for a better game to spearhead their movement toward putting their new releases online (the game is only $20 to boot), and it’s not an exaggeration to call this one of our favorite portable games of all time. It’s also, fittingly, our pick for the best PSP game released for the system thus far. If you don’t own this game, you’re missing out plain and simple.

You will too once you give LocoRoco 2 a shot.

It’s more than tangentially linked to the game on which it’s based, taking place two years before the events of the original Vice City, but pouring even more content and options into an area that’s near-identical to that seen in the PS2 game.
